My customer's billing address changed on order when a subscription renewed. What can I do about it?

Sometimes you might realize that in subscription renewal orders, billing address suddenly changed to a different one, and did not keep the one from initial order.

Billing addresses in Shopify are bound to the billing address of the payment method. This means that If a customer uses the same card they already used before, the first address used with that payment method will overwrite the billing address on the upcoming order on all renewals with this payment method.

In order to keep the same billing address on all upcoming subscription renewals, we recommend that your customer uses the same billing address with the same payment method for all orders. Switching the payment method between renewals will also change the billing address to the one bound to this new payment method.

Here is another sample how billing address changes with renewals:

  1. Customer places an order with a card number XX/YY that has billing address A bound to that card. They already used this card before where they set the billing address A
  2. Now, when placing a new order in checkout, customer changes the billing address of the credit card to billing address B
  3. Initial orders shows billing address B.
  4. Whenever a subscription renews, a new order is created with billing address A, and NOT the newly set billing address B.
